This first sketch process image is from my sketch book. This picture is my initial idea of what the gun-wounded cake was going to look like.

The second image below is a page from my sketch book when I was designing a sculpture that requires one book plus your own materials to create it. The sculpture was going to made from an old encyclopedia book into a bird trophy head. This was my sketch plan for making the sculpture. I did this project at the SMFA, Fashion as an art class.

Artist Statement

When I work on a piece of art, the first thing I do before drawing or sculpting anything is to create a theme and a challenge. This is my way of making art challenging and fun. A lot of my themes are subtle and I make work related to the theme in both a literal and metaphorical way. In a lot of my work I like to take risks and go extreme, but I can be subtle too. My goal of taking a risk is to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new technique that I’m not familiar with. Even though the risks I take could be successful or not successful, there is always something that I gain. Some of my works are inspired by Japanese culture and design, but I like to approach things creatively, without limiting myself to one style. Over the past four years at BAA I have been struggling with separating myself from anime style art to my own style. Even though I love anime, I noticed it was hindering my skills. I wanted to make something that would represent me and had my aura on it. I am the type of person who needs to experiment with different media. At BAA, I learned a lot about the importance of composition and negative space. They are strong aspects of my work. I learned how to take risks when I approach creating a challenging piece of art. Also, I learned to grow patient with detailed art that requires a lot of craftsmanship and time.
My favorite types of art are illustration and sculpture. Right now, I like to make sculptures of faux food using a variety of materials. I believe what makes good art is time; I spend a lot of time with my work perfecting the details and improving the craftsmanship. The best works of art I have seen have made me feel amazed and inspired. I want my work to make people feel that way too. In the future I plan on going to school and continuing my studies as an art student. I plan to someday be a professional artist

Critques of my work

This Monday, I had a critique session with the junior visual art class. We took turns sharing our art work and discussed what was strong and what is weak about their work and how to improve. My class mentioned that in my work there is strong contrast and value, but I need to work on my figure drawing pieces because they are out of proportion in some areas.

My next independent art project is based on the theme of food! Instead of drawing this project out on paper, I plan on making a 3D sculpture. The issue I am addressing to is teen gun violence and deaths. While researching, I was really moved by the horrible massacre at Columbine high school, when many innocent students and teachers were killed and injured by two students armed with guns. I wanted to dedicate this project to the columbine massacre, so I decided to make a 3D sculpture of a angelic white cake pierced with many gun wounds. But the issuesalso refers to teen gun violence and deaths in general. A white cake is a representation of innocent life and gun holes around the cake is what wounding an innocent life. The cake will be made of salt-dough, white paint, caulk, and found objects for other decorations. The cake will be life size and will look very much like a realistic cake

This art piece is successful because it's composition and value which makes it seem like the object is coming out of the paper.

I struggled with drawing the form of the object because there are many complex details to include.
